I have talked a lot about Keyword research, and it’s benefits. One of the major mistake I have seen many people making is, targeting direct keywords, instead of long-tail keywords (LTK) . If you are wondering, what are long tail keywords, here is a quick example of difference between short-tail and long-tail :
- Long-tail Keywords (Ex. of short tail keyword) – Monthly searches 50
- Long tail Keywords vs. short tail Keywords (Ex. of LTK) – Monthly searches 12
- long tail keywords conversion rate (Ex of LTK) – Monthly searches 13
Now, if you will notice that last two Keywords have less-searches, but the competition for these two keywords are far less than short-tail keyword. Also, long-tail keywords drive more targeted traffic than short one, and hence your conversion (Sales, email sign-up) improves a lot. If you want to learn more about it, check out How long tail keywords could equal massive success.
Here I’m sharing some of the best tools for finding long-tail keywords in any niche. Note, some of them are free, and few of them are paid. I will explain the features, and you can pick anyone which suit your needs.

Google auto-populate keywords (Search term), based on popularity. All you need to do is, start typing your first keyword, and select the options from auto-suggestion. Though, you need to use any Keyword tool to see other details like Number of searches, CPC, competition and other important details. On my micro-niche site, I usually skip the competition check, as with niche site, it’s easily to get higher ranking. You can check out this guide from SEMRUSH, which explains the process in detail.
